Podcasts

The word podcast is a contraction of iPod and broadcast, and refers to the ubiquitous nature of Apple's popular mp3 player, iPod, and its variants. A podcast is similar to a radio broadcast, but instead of going out over the airwaves, it is stored as a sound file at our site. HawaiiDiner.com produces a podcast every other week, opposite our newsletter week, which covers food and dining related topics, interviews with chefs and food-industry people, and food and dining news such as new restaurant openings. There are two ways to listen to a podcast:

1) Use your browser: from the Podcast Directory, click on the "Listen" link beneath an interesting podcast and your browser will start playing it. This option is great if you want to stare at the progress bar of the podcast while you are listening. You could open a new browser window and surf around HawaiiDiner.com if you wanted to multi-task.

2) Use an mp3 player, like an iPod: from the Podcast Directory, download the podcast to your computer. If you have a Windows machine, right-click on the "Listen" link and select "Save Target As" or similar from the pop-up menu. For Mac, option-click on the "Listen" link and the file will start downloading. You may be prompted to select a location on your computer to store the file. Treat this just like an mp3 music file and put it where you store music; this will allow you to use a music management program, like iTunes, to upload the podcast to your mp3 player. This option is great if you want to listen while you are on the go.

In support of the podcast we have an RSS feed. Through this emerging technology, you can get real-time updates when new articles, reviews, newsletters and podcasts are posted at our site. Click here to learn about our RSS feed.
